Special Initiatives
Learning Collaborative
The Learning Collaborative serves as a collective space to deepen understanding and appreciation of the needs of newcomer immigrant youth and unaccompanied children, acknowledge their and their families’ strengths and challenges, and improve access to care through strategic and creative planning and implementation. The Learning Collaborative meets on the last Thursday of each month, from 3:15-4:30pm, via Zoom. If you would like to participate, please contact Julie McIntyre (Julie.McIntyre@LPA-theopendoor.org) and the registration information will be forwarded to you.
Women’s Groups
LPA hosts group sessions every other week for Latinx women. This is a safe, confidential space where these women can share personal struggles, offer support to each other, and learn techniques to address personal and interpersonal challenges they face. The meetings are held in Spanish, allowing members to speak in their first language.
Play Therapy
Due to the recent increase in referrals of young children, LPA has begun training key staff in Child-Centered Play Therapy (CCPT) and Filial Therapy (FT), modalities which utilize the power of play to address psychosocial difficulties. Our goal is to build a program through which we can support and empower immigrant families with young children who have experienced trauma. Both CCPT and FT strive to promote healthy development in children, enhance understanding and communication between parents and children, and improve the overall well being of the family unit. Since this initiative is still in its early stages, current referrals of young children will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Please reach out to info@lpa-theopendoor.org with any questions.
