Referrals to LPA and FAQ’s
LPA supports the mental well-being of the Latino community throughout Pennsylvania. We do this through the provision of therapeutic case management, which combines mental health therapy, counseling, and supportive case management services that support positive mental health-focused outcomes. If you have a client in need of Spanish or Indigenous language mental health services in Pennsylvania, please email info@lpa-theopendoor.org with your contact and some basic background information on the client you would like to refer. Someone from our referral team will reach back out to you within a couple of days. Please read the information below before deciding if LPA is the right referral for your client.
LPA does not provide emergency response services. If your client is in need of emergency case management, housing, legal, or any other time-sensitive, first response social services, please contact another organization in the Philadelphia area that can assist. If you have need assistance with a referral, we would be happy to share information about organizations we refer our clients.
In addition, LPA does not provide general case management or advocacy services. While LPA staff is trained to provide case management and personal advocacy, as needed, to support positive outcomes related to the counseling and therapy services we provide, we do not take on new clients solely for case management or personal advocacy needs.
Below are some additional Frequently Asked Questions that will help you determine whether LPA is the right referral for your clients. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any additional questions.
FAQ’s
What are LPA’s eligibility guidelines?
Individuals must be uninsurable/not eligible for Medicaid or any other form of insurance coverage. This does not include individuals who are receiving other healthcare services under “emergency Medicaid waiver” funding since EMW’s do not cover ongoing mental health care. If an individual meets this criteria but has the financial resources to pay “out of pocket,” we recommend providers who provide a sliding scale for therapy services. Individuals must be non-US citizens and speak either Spanish or English as these are the only languages provided at LPA.
What if an individual speaks a language other than Spanish or English? Does LPA use interpretation services?
We do not use interpretation services for therapy support. We prioritize providing direct Spanish and English language therapeutic services.
How much do LPA services cost?
Therapeutic services are offered at no cost to community members. Some LPA services are subcontracted through one of our several partner organizations from whom funding is received.
LPA is based in Southeast PA, but my clients lives elsewhere. Can LPA help them too?
Yes. While LPA’s in-person programming takes place mostly in the Philadelphia region, LPA is able to provide virtual services to clients throughout na wide geographic area.
My client lives outside of PA, can LPA help?
Yes. LPA is able to serve clients who live outside of Pennsylvania. Sometimes, there are other local resources that may be able to better serve clients in other areas, but LPA staff is happy to help locate these organizations and facilitate referrals.
Does LPA do case management for community members?
LPA will assist with therapeutic case management for existing clients only, as long as the primary reason for the referral is therapeutic in nature.
What is the age range for therapeutic services?
We accept referrals for individuals who are 12 years old and older. If a child is under the age of 12, we will assess the reason for the referral and proceed accordingly. Any younger child must be accompanied by an adult guardian/parent in the therapeutic process.
What are some of the reasons for not accepting referrals, outside of the criteria mentioned?
Due to more recent funding constraints and the availability of other resources through city funding, LPA is currently not accepting referrals directly from the Department of Human Services/CUA’s. If an agency is known to have other funds that are available to provide services and is not in partnership with LPA, these referrals will only be accepted on a case-by-case basis.
Does LPA do evaluations or provide evidence for immigration court proceedings.
LPA does not due evaluations for immigration proceedings. We provide a short letter as courtesy for clients who are in immigration proceedings. This document provides the dates of therapy, focus of the work done through LPA, and recommendations for ongoing or future care.
Is there a time limit of services provided?
No, although the typical length is approximately 3-6 months for ongoing services. Youth programming is more extensive over a longer period of time. The therapeutic support is determined mutually between the therapist and the client.
